Faris Nasir

I’m Faris, an interdisciplinary artist.

I grew up in Port Dickson, a small beach town about 1.5 hours from KL. Although I studied accounting, I transitioned to becoming a jackfruit farmer in 2007 at Mempaga, Bentong with my friend, Bern. We also spent our weekends working at Deerland Park, Lanchang a privately owned deer sanctuary. We spent our days with farming, fishing and hiking.

My first artistic medium is bubbleology. That started in 2010, initially just as a mission to bring giant bubbles to the peak of Mount Kinabalu, after being inspired by Sterling Johnson (USA). Brought bubble up the mountain in 2013 with some friends.

From a mere hobby, it became a passion as I love bubbling in nature. Thanks to ShazniPrakashBihzhu and KL Flickr Meetup Group for believing in my passion. Kapten Buehbossa was born out of this passion.

I've climbed Mt Kinabalu 8 times within the past 2 decades, it's like my personal Mecca.

Anyway, the passion turned into an obsession when I was hooked with the beauty of bubble science, thanks to Bryce Miyauchi (Hawaii) my first bubble mentor, Tom Noddy (USA) and the Soap Bubble Fanciers Yahoo! group. I helped contribute to the Soap Bubble Wiki, then assisted in migrating the Yahoo! Group to Bubble Talk when Yahoo! discontinued their services.

From obsession, soap bubbles became my profession, thanks to individuals, party planners, event managers, schools, institutions and festivals around the country, to name a few: PD Waterfront bubblers, Dear Azalea, La Memoria, SupaDupa Circus, Superhero Race, Mint Events, Pusat Sains Negara, George Town Festival, Urbanscapes, Rantai Art, Art of Speed, R!UH, Sunway Lagoon, LinDees Children’s School, Pusat Kreatif Kanak-Kanak Tuanku Bainun, Tiarasa Escapes, BFM 89.9, Majalah 3, Selamat Pagi Malaysia, Kosmo, NST, The Star, Sabrina Saw, Ning Baizura, Ezza, Mei Ling and many more.

At Bubble Daze 5 (2018) in Wales (UK), organized by Paola from Dr Zigs, I performed on the gala show. I was deeply honored on the same stage, Sterling and many pioneer bubbleologists from around the world were also performing and witnessing the magical night. During the event, together we broke a number of Guinness World Book of Records.

In 2020, I discovered the "Faris Bubble Puzzle" a puzzling soap bubble sculpture that resembles a 4-6 duoprism.

Thanks to Lena Lim for connecting me to The Fiery Pixies when I was performing for ClubMed Cherating in 2015. This led me to connect with Psycusix and worked with them until 2018 as a modern circus artist. Inspired by Shaheen, I picked up poi spinning as another artistic practice. This connected me with a worldwide flow community, thanks to Psycusix, Starlight AlchemyLABracadabra and KL Flow Jam.

As a circus performer and bubbleologist, I’ve performed worldwide in countries such as India, China, Dubai, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea, UK, Eswatini and more.

In 2017, I started delving into digital art as a continuity of soap bubble digital photography. This led me into 3D fractal art. My main software is Mandelbulber and After Effects. The strive to present my digital art led me to the art of projection mapping and VJ, with the mission to add value to the local electronic music scene. Vuevossa Visuals was born.

This also led me to connect with Shakir from Filamen and many new media artists in Malaysia. Then NFXT was founded and we had fun during the pandemic discovering new ethos of decentralization in arts and technology. I've discovered new friends and interests on blockchain and AI with Zhonk Vision, Nero One, Izealist, Mumu and many more creativists. Together we organized Portals: New Horizon (2021). We managed to connect more than 30 arts collective from around the country.

I first became a VJ thanks to Epic Tribe, performed for Billie Blue & The Nowhere Men in 2018 at The Bee, Publika. While playing around in NFXT, I honed my skills on Resolume Arena. Then thanks to Chunky Munky, Kuantum, Natural Mystik, Altered VisionBrendan De Cruz, Fairuz Sulaiman, Jonny Vicious and Victor G from Wetdeck Sessions, I’ve been VJ’ing in so many places and events such as in RexKLW Kuala LumpurIt’s The Ship and Sunset by Neon.

After Psycusix, I joined the KongsiKL community thanks to Junyi. That’s where I met a lot of artists of different disciplines. I joined the Seni Tiga (light, movement & sound) initiative and made Foundry (2019) with wonderful new friends. Sandee connected me with the theatre community. I had fun making arts with Ix Wong, Grace NgChee Heai, Normah Nordin, ACT-ion Theatre, Orang-Orang Drum Theatre, Frhythm Percussion, Masakini Theatre, KL Shakespeare PlayersKlang River Festival and more.

TLDR, I do soap bubble art, poi dance, dragon ribbon flow, 3D fractal art, VJ and projection mapping. I love nature, art collaborations and making new friends.

A TESTIMONY

"I am a firm believer in striking a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity, the physical and the virtual realms. In an era where artificial intelligence threatens to automate nearly everything, leaving humans with little purpose, I have found my passion – the key to maintaining a healthy mind and body.

My passions lie in the art of poi spinning, the ethereal beauty of soap bubbles, and the boundless creativity of digital arts. Poi has become more than just a performance art for me; it is a lifestyle that cultivates discipline, focus, and physical wellness. Soap bubbles, with their fragile, transient nature, serve as a healing medium, reminding me to embrace the present moment.

Yet, I am also drawn to the cutting-edge world of digital arts, where I can unleash my imagination and create immersive, virtual experiences. By seamlessly blending these traditional and modern art forms, I strive to bridge the gap between the tangible and the intangible, the corporeal and the cerebral.

In a future where machines may render many human endeavors obsolete, I firmly believe that pursuing one's passion is essential for finding meaning and purpose in life. My hobbies – bubbles, circus arts, and digital creativity – are more than just pastimes; they are the wellsprings from which I draw sustenance, inspiration, and a deep sense of self-discovery.

Without these passions, I cannot envision living a truly fulfilling existence. It is through the pursuit of our individual callings that we can transcend the mundane, tap into our authentic selves, and ultimately, find the courage to embrace the great unknown that lies ahead."
